Villiage of Hamilton, New YorkAbstractThis project is intended to enhance efforts in a rural area to plan for growth. The Village of Hamilton, well known by many as the location of Colgate University, is a small village concentration within a large rural agricultural area. The Village center is reminiscent of a lovely New England village setting, including a village green bordered by residences, community buildings and retail stores dating from the 19th and 20th Centuries. The Village and immediate surroundings are undergoing some development pressure. As well, local leaders are seeking to capitalize on some growth opportunities to enable the community to continue being largely self-sustaining, with employment opportunities for a wide range of endeavors and interests. The planning approach associated with this proposal envisions introducing on a wider basis than is now the case those techniques increasingly favored by progressive large urban centers. The project approach would provide for enhanced discussions of, and community involvement in, the application of growth concepts that include the principles of Smart Growth, coordination of land use and transportation decision-making to prevent sprawl, institution of arterial access management, and institution of an hierarchical street network to preserve rights-of-way to both guide future growth as well as support the arterial access management efforts.
