Main Street Corridor Planning and Research Project
Houston, Texas

Abstract

The Main Street Corridor Planning and Research Project (also known as Main Street Revitalization Project) is a strategically integrated, transportation and land-use planning project that will develop a singular, urban vision for the eight-mile Main Street Corridor that is the historic heart of the Houston region. The Corridor connects two major employment nodes and is the locus of over 250,000 jobs requiring a wide range of skill levels. It also runs through the heart of Houston's Enhanced Enterprise Community where over 95,000 people live, many of whom face disadvantages in terms of work force skills and mobility. This project will encourage transit and pedestrian-oriented development, improve access to the corridor, explore ground-breaking implementation strategies, and institute innovative evaluation techniques. Partnership building among public agencies, private and non-profit interests will be a vital component of the planning process. As a result of this project, trends toward inner city revitalization will be reinforced, leading to a reduction of automobile dependency and improved air quality in the region.
