| Arlington County, VA received a $450,000 TCSP grant to conduct planning and engineering studies to alleviate the problems that pedestrians and bicyclists face from poorly designed intersections and roads surrounding the Ballston and Rosslyn Metro stations. The resulting design strategies will serve as a model for transit station areas that have significant transit-oriented development but also major arterial streets. The Ballston and Rosslyn Metro station areas represent emerging examples of high-density transit-oriented development. However, the station areas are also traversed by wide arterial streets with high traffic volumes. Difficult street crossings hamper the goal of creating networks of pedestrian and bicycle routes to provide access to the transit stations and other destinations. The TCSP project includes user surveys of pedestrians and bicyclists, general input from the public, and information dissemination regarding problems faced by pedestrians and bicyclists trying to cross highway-type roads. The resulting information will inform the planning process and will result in the selection of an alternative(s) to improve pedestrian and bicycle access.
