City of Santa Fe, NM: Solana Neighborhood Center- A Model of Growth Without Sprawl (FY 2000)

Carissa LaCrosse, City of Santa Fe Planning Department

The City of Santa Fe received a $200,000 grant to rehabilitate a portion of the historic downtown that contains a strip mall development known as the Solana Center. The grant will demonstrate how the enhancement of transit, bicycle, and pedestrian options as well as land use and design strategies can be used to strengthen an urban community.

The Solana Center currently does not blend harmoniously with its adjacent land uses and lacks the architectural charm of the city's historical area. Approximately 20 percent of the grant will be directed for the design phase, including activities to strengthen public involvement and drafting of a conceptual master plan for the site for 2005. The remaining 80 percent of the grant will be used for the physical improvement of the site. The project evaluation will address improved neighborhood livability; enhancement of transit, pedestrian, and bicycle accessibility; and "neighborhood center" ordinance development. The project will facilitate the implementation of Santa Fe's general plan.
