| The Greater Madison County I-69 Corridor Preservation Initiative received $500,000 in TCSP funding to reverse the current paradigm of sprawl development in the area. Madison County is on the suburban fringe of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is facing increasing growth pressures, especially along the I-69 freeway corridor. The current pattern of development has claimed substantial agricultural and environmentally-sensitive acreage and has led to community designs that are neither pedestrian-friendly nor aesthetically appealing. The project will attempt to tackle the consequences of current land use and transportation decisions and, in tandem, develop analytical and regulatory tools to preserve land. The purpose of the study also includes the development of a livable communities model that concentrates on the creation of livable communities using small towns as the paradigm. The long-range regional planning focus will involve 1) greater public input and public education mechanisms to promote orderly development and redevelopment of land; 2) preservation and retrofitting of existing transportation facilities; 3) pursuit of effective urban and community design; and 4) comprehensive policies to reduce sprawl, travel time, air pollution, and traffic congestion.
