| The Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC), the MPO for the Seattle region and an FY1999 grantee, is using $400,000 in TCSP funding to promote transit-oriented development through a three-part strategy consisting of 1) a regional coordination and awareness campaign, 2) local technical assistance, and 3) project evaluation. The project will help make the urban growth boundaries designated in PSRC's 1998 Urban Growth Area plan a reality. To provide transportation infrastructure for the growth area plan, the region envisions a $4 billion investment in transit in the next 10 years, including buses, light rail, and passenger ferry services. The Transit Station Communities Project focuses on a 20-year planned investment to add over 100 transit stations to the 15 existing stations. Using its own $200,000 funding match, the MPO is partnering with the University of Washington and local governments to target the general public, local agencies, and the development community to increase understanding of transit-oriented development and to provide both short- and long-term evaluation of project outcomes. Most of the TCSP funding, however, is being directed to local assistance activities for transit agencies and local governments. These activities encompass the creation of technical assistance teams, computer land use simulation, market analysis/feasibility studies, and transit station area profiles.
