Teton County, WY: Mapping for a Millennium (FY 2000)

Teresa deGroh, Teton County Planning and Development

Teton County was awarded a grant in the amount of $342,805 to accomplish Phase I of a four-phase project that will culminate in a 20-year transportation plan. The objective of the overall project is to develop transportation and land use strategies to preserve the natural environment and quality of life in the face of increasing growth pressures.

Teton County, which includes Grand Teton National Park and part of Yellowstone National Park, is facing strong growth pressures, including second home development, as well as the need to accommodate an influx of visitors in the summer season. Phase I of the county's project entails a "futures mapping effort" that involves identifying areas where more dense development should be concentrated. Subsequent phases of the project include the design of more pedestrian-friendly mixed-use villages, transportation demand management techniques such as ridesharing and lagging of working hours by employers, and a monitoring phase that will incorporate data collection through a travel survey instrument.
