Readiness Stakeholder Engagement

FHWA has designed several activities in order to assess and increase the readiness of FHWA stakeholders to implement MAP-21 performance provisions while also advancing the state of the practice.

These activities are designed to assist in identifying, prioritizing, and validating the MAP-21 performance implementation concerns and needs of our stakeholders. Some of our stakeholder readiness activities will also address investing in resources that address concerns, needs, and improvements for the advancement of performance management. FHWA has also developed activities for stakeholders to deploy resources that improve the Performance Management State of Practice. Finally, we have also established activities to assist in evaluating the impact of efforts to improve Performance Management State of Practice.

With all of these activities we will be working to cultivate online communities of performance management professionals and stakeholders to engage in information exchange on performance management topics. Each of the following activities are being developed and as more information is available they will link to their own pages serving as collaboration portals, ensuring that stakeholders have a place to work with each other and dialogue with FHWA on advancing the state of the practice.

The activities currently under development include:

  • TPM Regional Peer Exchange Program Designed to help State DOT's and local agencies work together to identify and collectively overcome roadblocks that impede efforts to implement thriving transportation performance management programs.

  • Community of Practice Collaboration Portal The purpose of this external collaboration portal is to support FHWA's effort to improve communication and collaboration among its Stakeholders.

  • TPM Round Table Serving as a forum for informal, open, and candid discussions on how to make transportation performance management effective at the national level.

  • Transportation Data Industry Day and Innovation Challenges Consist of industry, academics, and government exhibitors; presentations and demonstrations showcasing technology and innovative processes; and workshops focusing on how technology can be used to exploit transportation data to: address the implementation of performance management, asset management, and performance-based planning provisions in MAP-21; improve stakeholder engagement strategies; enhance decision making processes; and navigate the federal funding programs.

  • State of the Practice Self-Assessment Tools (Late FY2013) Working with transportation community, TPM looks forward to partnering with stakeholders to develop self-assessment tools that help them identify ways to improve performance management processes and identify what is actually working.

  • Interactive Infographic Spotlight Series (Spring 2013) Designed to showcase what designers, transportation professionals, students, and others are doing to present data and information in a manner that conveys a clear story to stakeholders regarding efforts to improve transportation performance, the impacts of FHWA programs, and timelines/processes for implementing MAP-21 regulations and guidance.

  • Additional Activities including:

    • Liaison with FHWA and other USDOT modes of transportation performance management issues.
    • Encourage transportation data exploration and data discovery efforts for innovation events/opportunities.
    • Conferences and Symposiums.
