AASHTO/Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) Program

Hands-on science and math education program. A 54-module computer-based and internet-accessible TRACE-PAC is provided to participating high schools and some middle schools. Encourages interest in transportation, engineering, and related disciplines among minorities and women, but is not exclusive.

Transportation and Technology Academy of Cardozo High School

Work-readiness program. Operates from Cardozo Senior High School in Washington D.C. Bridges gaps between classroom and workplace through mentoring, summer internships, regular student work assignments, and career development activities. First transportation studies academy in the Washington area. FHWA became involved in 1994, when the FHWA Administrator signed the partnership agreement.

Summer Transportation Institute

Summer training program. Features 4 to 5 weeks of instruction, SAT preparation, Life Management Seminars, field trips, and student projects. Stimulates interest in transportation industry. Ninth and tenth grade students who express interest in engineering, science, transportation, and technology careers are selected to participate.

Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program

Fellowship Program. Encompasses all areas of transportation to attract, enhance, and retain the top talent in transportation research and engineering professions. Minimum funding each year is $2M, and there are more than 100 fellowship recipients each year.

Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and On-The-Job Training Supportive Services (OJTSS) Initiatives

Pre-apprenticeship program. Integral element of Federal-aid program. Through partnerships between state government and construction industry, includes numerous initiates to increase the numbers of minorities and women in construction-related employment.

Urban Youth Corps

Hands-on work program. More than 1,500 young people ages 16-25, have participated in projects “for the rehabilitation, reclamation, and beautification of urban public housing and public works, and transportation resources or facilities. This program includes landscaping, urban tree care, reforestation, facilities improvement, and restoration of historic sites.

Adopt-a-School Program

More than 300 schools have been adopted by DOT offices, which provide mentoring, tutoring, and other services to students to help them learn math, science, and technology.

Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups

Summer Internship Program. FHWA provides funding and has lead-agency responsibility to conduct a 10-week internship program in offices throughout the DOT. Students are selected from colleges universities around the nation, and while working, gain exposure to a wide range of transportation related experiencing program offices in the Headquarter’s and Field.
