The FHWA is pleased to announce that the 2014 Excellence in Utility Awards Program is now accepting nominations. This biennial awards program recognizes innovative utility relocation and accommodation practices and showcases outstanding utility programs, initiatives, technologies and projects. This program also recognizes individuals who have significantly enhanced how their organization or agency relocates or accommodates utilities on surface transportation improvement projects.

The division offices are asked to encourage their partners, State, local and private sector associates to submit entries for this year's awards. Nominations must include the nomination form, a written endorsement by a State Department of Transportation (DOT), and one photograph. These items will be accepted through December 2, 2013.

Awards will be presented in the following five categories:

  • Project Development - demonstrating the ability to plan and design surface transportation projects involving complex utility coordination.
  • Construction Management - recognizing creative solutions to utility related challenges encountered during project construction.
  • Innovation - rewarding the ability to incorporate new technologies or processes to enhance utility related projects, or an organizations' utility coordination program.
  • Incentives for Utility Relocation - demonstrating the benefits of using incentives to relocate and accommodate utilities.
  • Utility Program Leadership - recognizing individuals or teams that have sustained achievement in the areas of utility programs, policies or initiatives that have advanced or led innovative or new utility accommodation and relocation practices or provided lasting contributions to an agency or the highway and utility communities.

Anyone may nominate an individual, team, process, initiative or surface transportation project located on the National Highway System or that used federal highway funding between October 1, 2011 and September 30, 2013. The State DOT endorsement may be in the form of a State DOT letter, memo or email submitted with the nomination form. Division offices will be afforded an opportunity to provide comments for award selections that are received within their State. Award winners will be recognized during AASHTO's Right-of-Way and Utility Conference to be held April 27-30, 2014, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A judging panel made up from a variety of organizational backgrounds (e.g., FHWA, State DOTs, local agencies, academia, and private contractors) will be established. Anyone interested in serving on the judge's panel should contact Ken Leuderalbert at ken.leuderalbert@dot.gov. The judging of award nominations will be performed electronically and by conference call, eliminating the need for judges to travel.
