FHWA Washington Division > Environment > Endangered Species Act
Regulations
Federal actions are subject to the requirements of the Endangered Species Act. In Washington State many species are listed as threatened or endangered. Marine species including anadramous fish such as Chinook salmon are regulated by the National Marine Fisheries Service, NMFS, and all other listed species are regulated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, USFWS. Projects using FHWA funding or requiring an approval action by FHWA require consultation with the Services under Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act.
Our Area Engineers should be your first point of contact for project-specific questions. If they are unavailable,
contact James Christian or Gary Hughes, their Team Leaders.
