A Report to Our Customers |

We in the Federal Highway Administration are committed to working with you,
our customers and partners, to keep America moving safely, comfortably,
economically, and without harm to our environment. Stimulated by the
President's and Vice President's National Performance Review initiative and our
commitment to excellent service, we have taken many steps to understand our
customers' needs and expectations and to strengthen our partnerships with all
levels of government and the private sector. Through FHWA-wide quality
initiatives, we have renewed emphasis on customer service, public participation,
and continuous quality improvement to ensure that we add unique value to our
Nation's transportation system.
In 1995, we developed our initial customer service plans, identified our customers, and established standards to assess the quality of our programs and services. We have conducted public hearings, open houses, surveys, interviews, and the like to get your input and feedback. Your views have resulted in many new initiatives, like the Partnership for Transportation Investment to allow states and localities to use multiple strategies for financing, public education campaigns to promote highway and traffic safety, and the promotion of new technologies like the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). We are also working with our DOT modes and Federal agency partners to reduce regulatory and statutory burdens. Internally, we are using new technology like electronic data sharing and payment systems to reduce paperwork and speed up program delivery, and reducing layers of management to streamline the way we do business. We will always seek your input to help us evaluate our programs, rethink our Federal role, streamline our processes, revise our policies, take new approaches to old challenges, and enhance the quality of our services. |
