1996 Excellence in Highway Design
Category 9 - Highway Improvements on Publicly Owned Land
Award of Merit
Exit Glacier Road
Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska
Designer: | Western Federal Lands Highway Division |
Contractor: | Wilder Construction Co. |
The reconstruction of the primitive Exit Glacier Road into a safe two-lane scenic access to a wilderness national park was an engineering and environmental challenge. Extensive and unique irrigation to protect and enhance water quality, wetlands, riparian zones, and fishery resources were incorporated into the project. The goal to provide a more maintainable road with roadside recreational opportunities that faces less exposure to river damage and flooding was also met.
