1996 Excellence in Highway Design
Category 3B - Major Highway Structures - Under $10 Million
Award of Merit
MD Route 161 Over Deer Creek
Harford County, Maryland
Designer: | Maryland State Highway |
Contractor: | Corman Construction, Inc. |
The new bridge traversing Deer Creek along Route 161 improves the geometries of the roadway while blending gracefully with the aesthetics of the area. The new structure replaced a deteriorated, 70-year-old, steel girder bridge. The stone masonry selected for the new bridge's abutments and pier were chosen to match an adjacent mill structure. In addition, all steel elements of the bridge were painted in Park Service Brown to match the natural surroundings.
