Highway Design of Safe Bridges, Second Edition

The second edition of Hydraulic Design Series (HDS) number 7 (HDS-7) “Hydraulic Design of Safe Bridges” provides information on the hydraulic analysis and design of highway bridges.  The goal of HDS-7 is to provide information facilitating hydrologic and hydraulic design of bridges that provide safety for the public while optimizing costs and limiting impacts to property and the environment. The HDS-7 document discusses many significant aspects of bridge hydraulic design, including topics related to legal and regulatory frameworks, hydrological aspects and characterizations, specific approaches for bridge hydraulic modeling, hydraulic model selection, bridge design impacts on scour and stream instability, sediment transport, and bridge deck drainage.

Compared to the HDS-7 first edition (2012), this second edition of HDS-7 documents and applies new and updated advances and understandings of these topics.  As a result, FHWA considers the 2012 version of HDS-7 document to be archival and may no longer reflect current or accepted regulation, policy, guidance or practice.
