Pavement Maintenance Effectiveness: Innovative Materials Workshop (Participant's Notebook) General Interest: provides practical guidance to engineers responsible for the day-to-day design, construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and management of pavements. Research/Reference: useful for researchers doing further work in the pavement area as well as those developing improved testing and design procedures. Includes documents of historical value.

Primary Topic: Pavement Maintenance

Description: This workshop presented information on materials and procedures to improve the performance of routine and preventive maintenance repairs and treatments. It focuses on four primary maintenance areas: 1. Pothole repair (AC pavements); 2. Crack sealing and filling (AC pavements); 3. Spall repair (PCC pavements); and 4. Joint resealing (PCC pavements). Much of the material presented in this workshop is based on the results of a nationwide study of pavement maintenance activities. This study was started in 1988 under the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and has as its primary objective to identify the best materials and procedures to use in routine and preventive maintenance activities. The Instructor's Guide FHWA-SA-96-003 is also available.
