FHWA Works: Employee Spotlight - Melinda Urban
|
Full Name: Melinda Urban
Title: Senior Area Engineer
Division/Department: FHWA Colorado Division
Location: Lakewood, Colorado
What is your current position and how long have you been in this role?
I am a Senior Area Engineer in the FHWA Colorado Division. I have been in this position since November 2015. I provide leadership in project development from planning to construction on complex and major projects.
What is your typical workday like?
My typical workday varies depending on the time of year. During the summer, I am out in the field conducting construction inspections and reviews. Throughout the year, I provide leadership in project development not only within my own office but with the State DOT and public/private sectors by communicating, providing guidance, and working together toward a solution. I also guide and promote the Program & Project Delivery discipline through coordinating webinars and acting as a facilitator as a member of the discipline webinar team.
What has been your biggest accomplishment over the last year?
Over the past year, I had the opportunity to work in a different region of the state. During this time, I took the initiative to establish relationships and trust with my state counterparts to deliver the federal aid program more efficiently and promote new ideas for the state to pursue.
Prior to working at FHWA, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?
While in high school one summer, I worked at an accounting firm in Texas. I really enjoyed using the skill set that required reviewing accounts in paper ledgers and getting it all to balance out in the end. I still balance my checkbook with a paper ledger because of that high school job.
What are your hobbies in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering and spending time with my family wandering and exploring Colorado's playground.
What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned in your career to get you where you are today?
While working at FHWA, I've learned that change is going to happen and it's good. When it comes to your career, you need to take initiative and figure out what you really want to do or have an interest in. FHWA does want you to succeed. Also, keep learning and serving others every day.
Complete this sentence: "People would be surprised if they knew..."
About a 1.5 years ago, I became a certified Bingo Games Manager in the State of Colorado. (Yes, it is a real thing and there is state statute and everything.) My church was looking for a Games Manager so I quickly volunteered and signed up for the class, and passed the test so I can legally run a bingo game. I always liked playing bingo mostly for the social aspect of it all. I really do enjoy serving my community in this manner. Now you know where to find me on a Friday night!
