Rain, Rain, Go Away ...

Heavy rain, snow, and other storms can have significant impacts on the safety, mobility, and productivity of road users. Over the last decade, nearly a quarter of all vehicle crashes were weather related. On average, these crashes resulted in nearly 6,000 deaths and over 445,000 injuries annually. Likewise, delays can be profound and have significant economic impacts. Through FHWA's EDC-4 Weather-Savvy Roads Initiative your agency can proactively manage the surface transportation system ahead of and during adverse weather events.

What does it mean to be "Weather-Savvyy"?

WSR includes two distinct road weather management solutions:

Pathfinder. Collaboration between the National Weather Service, State DOTs, and support contractors to share and translate forecasts into consistent public transportation impact statements.

Integrating Mobile Observations (IMO). Weather and road condition data collection from fleet vehicles in order to provide a more comprehensive view of conditions along the road network in order to make more informed road weather management decisions.

What are the Benefits of Implementing WSR?

Learn how locals from across the nation are deploying WSR solutions to improve the safety and mobility of their roadways during adverse weather events!
