This project crosses the Van Duzen River, a component of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System. It required careful realignment of State Route 36, not only because of the mountainous terrain, but also to avoid impacting an archeological site; to preserve the existing historic bridge; and to avoid a large river boulder which has been designated as a scenic resource. The new bridge is a three-span cast-in-place, prestressed concrete box girder structure. The slightly arched span, the wide deck overhangs, and sloped columns soften its appearance and minimize its intrusion into the river gorge.
