1998 Excellence in Highway Design Category 9 - Highway Improvements on Publicly Owned Land Merit Award
General's Highway
Sequoia National Park, California
Designer: Central Federal Lands Highway Division, FHWA
Contractors: Stimpel-Wiebelhaus Associates, Redding
Creative solutions in both design and construction were needed to successfully reconstruct the 7.3-meter roadway while staying within the 6.4-meter wide "footprint" of the existing roadway prism. The resulting highway is aesthetically set into the hillside, meandering above the Kawea River's edge, protecting the park's beauty and environment while supporting the increasing number of visitors to the park.
