1998 Excellence in Highway Design Category 9 - Highway Improvements on Publicly Owned Land Award of Excellence
George Washington Memorial Parkway Reconstruction
Arlington, Virginia
Designer: Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, FHWA
Contractors: Fort Meyer Construction Company, Washington, DC
This facility was built in the 1940's as a scenic parkway but now carries over 100,000 vehicles per day. The reconstruction project produced an aesthetically and culturally acceptable roadway design for the National Park Service and the Virginia State Historic Preservation office that greatly improved the safety for today's traffic.
