CMIP Processing Tool Version 2

CMIP Processing Tool Beta Version

The beta version of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) Processing Tool Version 2.1 (Tool) (2020) is a web based software package that processes readily available downscaled climate data at the local level into relevant statistics for transportation planners and designers. This version is an update of the earlier version of the Tool. This version is considered a beta because it has not yet been extensively tested by a large outside user base. However, it has been tested internally and shown to function as designed. The tool imports and processes data from the U.S. Government Federally Affiliated Downscaled CMIP5 Climate and Hydrology Projections (DCHP) archive at https://gdo-dcp.ucllnl.org/downscaled_cmip_projections/. This website houses downscaled climate projections from the "World Climate Research Programme's".

This updated version of the CMIP Tool works with the statistically downscaled CMIP5 Localized Constructed Analog (LOCA) dataset. The updated CMIP Tool focuses on statistics that are relevant to precipitation and temperature variables that can be applied to planning and engineering designs. A CMIP Processing Tool Version 2.1 User Manual is in development. When available, the FHWA will provide a link to it at this site. Until that time, please refer to the previous version for some background information and see the reporting issues section below if additional assistance is required.

Accessing the CMIP Processing Tool Version 2.1

https://fhwaapps.fhwa.dot.gov/cmip is the link to access the tool. The CMIP Tool runs on the internet, and does not require a software package download. Results from the tool will be in the form of excel spreadsheets and will be posted on the View Results Section for download to a local computer.

System Compatibility

The FHWA has run the product on various browsers operating in the PC environment. When using the Tool, the user may need to temporarily disable pop-blockers when downloading the process results (in the form of excel spreadsheets) into the tool.

User's Guide

A user's guide provides directions and step-by-step processes for the tool.

Reporting Issues

If you believe you have found an issue with any version of the CMIP Tool (including calculation errors, interface problems, confusing functions, errors and omissions, and anything else that might impact the functionality and usability of the software), please use the contact button in the upper right-hand corner of the CMIP website (the website linked under "Accessing the CMIP Processing Tool Version 2.1") and provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Contact info (this won't be used unless there is a question about your CMIP Tool issue)
  • Computer operating system (Windows 10, Windows 8, etc.)
  • Complete description of each issue
  • Consider attaching a "screen shot" of the CMIP Tool window as applicable

The FHWA may request the additional information below to assist with resolving the issue:

  • The .tar file or excel file that demonstrates the issue
  • Additional screen shots of the CMIP Tool window if applicable
