Iowa DOT

Award Recipient Iowa Department of Transportation
Innovation Innovative Contracting & Ultra-High Performance Concrete
Award Fiscal Year 2017
Description

The primary objective project is to aid in the replacement of up to 14 local system bridges across several counties under one package. This will be accomplished by using Added-Options bidding. The project will also promote the use newly developed Iowa DOT Single Span Concrete Box Beam Bridge Standards with UHPC connection details. The new Iowa DOT standards are available for review here: https://iowadot.gov/bridge/bridge-and-culvert-standards/county-bridge-standards.

The performance goals for this project are maximizing the number of bridges replaced through the use of Added-Options bidding process, reducing project construction duration by using PBES, and increasing bridge deck durability through field-cast UHPC connections. This innovative contracting mechanism allows the State of Iowa to take advantage of economies of scale by bundling the supply of the superstructure materials for up to 14 bridge projects together under one contract. This project also makes the use of UHPC, an innovative material, a much more viable option for local public agencies.
