Innovation Variable Speed Reduction
Award Fiscal Year 2014
Project Aspect Construction
Description The Utah DOT will improve safety within construction work zones through temporary regulatory reduction in traveler speed on up to four projects. The UDOT anticipates that providing drivers accurate and reliable information about speed reductions and transit times, based on real time traffic and construction conditions will develop trust and enhanced compliance from travelers in the temporary speed limit reduction areas. It is anticipated that this will encourage greater compliance with reduced speed areas and will reduce work zone accidents. The UDOT Administrative Rules governing the establishment of speed limits is being revised to ensure that UDOT can take advantage of this evolving technology.
