Celebrating the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System

July 12, 2006 50th Anniversary Celebration
Guilford Welcome Center off of I-91 Northbound in
Vermont
At this event, there will be the unveiling of a static,
museum-style displays that outline in words and
pictures the history of the Interstate system both
nationally and in Vermont.  They will be placed in
rest areas along Vermont's interstates for the
duration of 2006.  There will also be made available
printed material detailing the federal and state
efforts for those who would like more information.

July 11, 2006 50th Anniversary Celebration
Vermont
Vermont Public Television- a local PBS Station- on
July 11th at 8:00 P.M will rebroadcast "Horatio's
Drive: America's First Road Trip" The station has
agreed to film a one-minute introduction to the
documentary hosted by Governor James Douglas and
Vermont Secretary of Transportation Dawn Terrill. 
The Governor and Secretary will use this time to
promote the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

women who contributed to the planning, designing,
and building of Vermont's 320-mile Interstate
System.

INDOT Chief of Staff Corey Carr threw the first
pitch of the game.  There was a distribution of the
Indiana state map and a raffle for a 50th
Anniversary giveaway bag.

A luncheon took place at 12:00 P.M. at the
Studebaker Museum. INDOT Commissioner
Thomas Sharp spoke at the luncheon, along with
an AASHTO representative, and the great-
grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

spur convoy stopped in Denver, where a media
and community event was held in celebration to
welcome the convoy.

The National Corvette Museum was the backdrop for the anniversary celebration.  There was a showcasing of Americas sports cars and Americas open road on the Interstate, also tying in the economic prosperity brought by the interstate system.

The 50th Anniversary of the Interstate Highway
System was recognized as part of the event with
a competition demonstrating students'
knowledge of the interstate highway system
through a work of art, technical drawing, poem,
picture collage, or written narrative.  One grand
prizewinner and four honorable mention winners
were recognized with a recognition plaque, gift
card and a book.
