NOTICE

Electro-Slag Welding

N 5040.25
June 28, 1977

  1. PURPOSE. It has been brought to out attention that the inspection suggested in FHWA Notice N5040.23 dated February 10, 1977, needs amplification. It was the intent of the notice to emphasize the need to review welding records and inspection procedures used in construction of nonredundant main load carrying tension members in existing structures known to have been welded with the electro-slag process, and to suggest that such welds located at critical points should be subjected to rigorous NDT inspection using both radiographic and ultrasonic methods. Subsequent to the February 10 notice, an investigation of an electro-slag weld failure and the notice, an investigation of an electro-slag weld failure and the inspection of several similar welds in members under construction have indicated strongly that weld repairs made to electro-slag welds are particularly vulnerable to failure.
