  1. What is the purpose of this change?

    1. With the passage of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), the FHWA’s Office of the Associate Administrator for Safety has initiated a new method for focusing on highway safety problems and solutions. The purpose of this change is to internally restructure the Office of Safety to better implement several new safety-focused programs and increased funding levels contained in SAFETEA-LU, as well as to address increased efforts to engage external partners and stakeholders in program planning and delivery.

    2. The proposed realignment creates a program support team, designated as the Safety Support Team, to manage and coordinate crosscutting issues and activities that are primarily administrative in nature.

    3. Minor changes and shifts have also been made to the mission and functions of the three existing Office-level organizations in order to better reflect current highway safety program priorities, better align related functions and activities, better reflect new programs included in SAFETEA-LU, and improve overall efficiency in delivery of products and services. The Office of Program Integration and Delivery is retitled as the Office of Safety Integration.

    4. The FHWA organization chart is revised accordingly.

    5. Minor editorial changes have also been made to a number of sections.

  2. Which parts of FHWA Order M 1100.1A are being updated? Part II (Organization and Functions), Chapter 6 (Office of Safety) is revised.

  3. Where can I obtain additional information concerning these changes? If you have questions about these changes, you may contact the Office of Information and Management Services, Management Programs and Analysis Division.
