Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Seeks Nominations for
2017 Environmental Excellence Awards

Applications will be accepted until September 15

WASHINGTON –The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced this week that it is accepting nominations for the 2017 Environmental Excellence Awards (EEAs), a biennial program that recognizes exemplary environmental stewardship in transportation planning and project development.

“Our country is moving toward a greener, more innovative and environmentally-conscious transportation system,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “These awards salute the efforts being done by environmental professionals nationwide, and deserve to be showcased nationally.”

The EEAs highlights environmental greatness in transportation planning and project development processes using FHWA funding sources. The awards span 16 categories, from cultural and natural heritage preservation to environmental justice, water quality improvements, and habitat restoration.

“Each year’s winners clearly are committed to balancing America’s transportation needs with its environmental needs,” said Administrator Nadeau. “The competition gets more intense each cycle, but the environment is the real winner.”

Any organization, agency, group or person may submit a nomination for any project, process, group or people involved in a FHWA-funded transportation project that has made an outstanding contribution beyond traditional transportation projects and has enabled environmental stewardship and partnerships to achieve a truly multi-faceted, environmentally sensitive transportation solution.

The 2017 awards mark two decades of environmental stewardship. In 2015, the District of Columbia’s Department of Transportation won for its use of “green infrastructure” to improve the region’s water quality, public health and ecosystem diversity. The Georgia Department of Transportation won the same year for its role in clearing an invasive pine species and expanding habitat for the state’s protected gopher tortoise.
