FHWA Awards Nearly $12 Million to Florida DOT for
Advanced Congestion-Management Technologies in Orlando

WASHINGTON – Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials today awarded an $11.9 million Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment (ATCMTD) grant to the Florida Department of Transportation for numerous intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies in Orlando that will make transportation safer and more accessible for drivers, transit riders, pedestrians and bicyclists.

“Technology is the future of U.S. transportation,” said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Brandye L. Hendrickson. “With innovations like those Florida is using in one of the most heavily traveled areas of the state, grants like this are making it easier for states to use the cutting-edge tools needed to fight the problem of congestion nationwide.”

FDOT, MetroPlan Orlando and the University of Central Florida (UCF) will utilize the grant to advance numerous ITS technologies–including PedSafe, an innovative pedestrian and bicycle collision avoidance system, GreenWay, which uses advanced traffic signal technology, SmartCommunity, for trip planning apps, and SunStore, which integrates FDOT data.

FHWA’s ATCMTD program funds cutting-edge technologies that are ready to be deployed to enhance existing traffic capacity for commuters and businesses. This year, the program funded 10 projects valued at nearly $54 million that that range from advanced real-time traveler information for drivers, public transit riders and freight shippers, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications that will enhance safety and pave the way for autonomous vehicles, and congestion-relieving traffic management systems.

The ATCMTD program was established under the “Fixing America's Surface Transportation” (FAST) Act. State departments of transportation, local governments, transit agencies, metropolitan planning organizations and other eligible entities were invited to apply under the program.
