Attached for your information is a copy of the final rule for incorporating the AASHTO publication A Policy on Design Standards Interstate System, January 2005 (Interstate Standards) into 23 CFR 625. The adoption of the Interstate Standards, effective June 6, supersedes previous editions of this document for use as the design standards on the Interstate System.

One copy of the Interstate Standards, together with a summary of changes from the previous edition, was distributed to field offices by our memorandum dated July 11, 2005 (copy attached). The changes in the new Interstate Standards are considered minor. Each Division Office should advise their respective State that the 2005 edition of the Interstate Standards has been adopted for use on the Interstate System.

The Interstate Standards are not intended to be a stand alone document for all of the geometric design standards applicable to projects on the Interstate System. Other documents such as A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (Green Book) and Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges are referenced in the Interstate Standards and are to be used for design criteria not specifically addressed in the Interstate Standards.
