Turner–Fairbank Highway Research Center Research and Development Data Sets/Data Initiatives

 

The Turner–Fairbank Highway Research Center provides Federal Highway Administration and the world highway community with research and development related to new highway technologies. The research focuses on providing solutions to complex technical problems through the development of more economical, environmentally sensitive designs; more efficient, quality controlled constructions practices; and more durable materials. The end result is a safer, more reliable highway transportation system.

The following Data Sets and Data Initiatives enable the Federal Highway Administration to advance the state of the practice and the transportation system.

Highway Safety Information System (HSIS)

The Highway Safety Information System is a multistate database that contains crash, roadway inventory, and traffic volume data for a select group of States. HSIS is managed by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) under contract with FHWA.

Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM)

The Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) is a suite of software analysis tools used to evaluate the safety and operational effects of geometric design decisions on highways.

Long-Term Pavement Performance

The Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program was established to collect pavement performance data as one of the major research areas of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). The first 5 years of the LTPP program were completed under the funding and direction of SHRP. Since 1991, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has continued the management and funding of the program. The LTPP program is managed by the Long-Term Infrastructure Performance Team under the Office of Infrastructure Research and Development.

Long-Term Bridge Performance

The LTBP is a 20 year or longer research program collecting scientific-quality data to provide a more detailed and timely picture of bridge health, improve knowledge of bridge performance, and ultimately promote the safety, mobility, longevity, and reliability of the Nation’s highway transportation assets.

Safety Training and Analysis Center (STAC)

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has established the Safety Training and Analysis Center (STAC) at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) to assist the research community and State departments of transportation (DOTs) when using data from the second Strategic Highway Research Program’s (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) and Roadway Information Database (RID).
