Drones have been heralded as the next big thing in bridge inspection.

  • WORK ZONE SAFETY- HOW TO MAKE CONSTRUCTION SITES SAFER
Crossroads, Minnesota Transportation Research Blog - 10/09/2016
A roundup of of work zone safety projects under way or recently completed by MnDOT and the Minnesota Local Road Research board (lrrb)

  • 2016 Sweet Sixteen High Value Research Projects
    AASHTO - 10/09/2016
Every January, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Research Advisory Committee (RAC) Value of Research Task Force solicits states to select recently completed 'High Value Research' (HVR) projects for submission as examples of 'Transportation Excellence Through Research.' Projects are submitted to the Value of Research Task Force by the end of March. The RAC then publishes an annual compilation of all HVR projects in a document entitled Research Impacts: Better-Faster-Cheaper.

  • Putting Research into Practice: Sinusoidal Centerline Rumble Strips Perform Better Than MnDOT's Current Design
    MnDOT - 10/09/2016
In field tests of sinusoidal centerline rumble strips, all four designs tested produced less exterior noise than the current design, but enough interior noise to alert drivers if they drift outside their lanes. The design that produced the most noise inside a pickup truck was recommended for implementation.

  • Use of Narrow Lanes and Narrow Shoulders on Freeways: a Primer on Experiences, Current Practice, and Implementation Considerations
    FHWA
    - 10/09/2016
The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a primer that provides information to policy makers, transportation agency managers, designers and operators on the use of narrow lanes and narrow shoulders to improve capacity within an existing roadway footprint.

  • Transportation Infrastructure Flooding: Sensing Water Levels and Rerouting Traffic Out of Danger
    MATS UTC - 10/09/2016
The current research project seeks to protect drivers who are on the road as flooding occurs and those who have not yet entered a particular road and must be re-routed. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach (hydrology, regional climate and precipitation forecasting, and transportation engineering), the project is using modeling and simulation to identify patterns of tidal levels and rainfall intensities and durations that cause flooding, using the data to forecast periods when roadways may be flooded.

  • FHWA Guidance: Initial State Performance Report
    FHWA
    - 10/09/2016
Title 23 U.S.C. 150(e) requires State DOTs to submit reports on performance targets and progress in achieving established targets to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) not later than October 1, 2016. The FHWA recognizes that reporting State Department of Transportation (DOT) targets by October 1, 2016, is not feasible since the first performance measures final rule requiring this report will not be effective by October 1, 2016. The FHWA also recognizes that since the second and third performance measures rules will not be effective prior to October 1, 2016, State DOTs will not have a full year to establish their targets. As a result, FHWA is issuing this guidance to assist State DOTs with meeting the statutory requirement.
