Alaska is a unique state with many unique features and government services. Here are a few common questions, with answers, that get asked:

Q: How do I obtain a U.S. DOT number for my commercial carrier business?
A: Unlike other FHWA offices, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) office in Alaska is not co-located with the Division Office. The FMCSA office is located in Anchorage in the Frontier building on 36th and "C" Street. Their number is 907-271-4068.

Q: When is the best time to drive to Alaska?
A: This depends a bit on where you are going within the state (see map below). The southeast panhandle, including the capital of Juneau, is only accessible by plane or boat, with the exception of Skagway and Haines at the northern tip of the panhandle. The Alaska highway can be driven through Canada to reach the northern panhandle, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and up to the arctic circle. Generally, the best months for travel are May through September.

Q: How are projects selected?
A: Federal funds are available to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The state utilizes the Statewide Transportation Improvements Program (STIP) to rank and prioritize projects.
