Error Messages and Warnings

This chapter addresses the types of system messages and prompts you may receive while using the HERS-ST software and how you can respond.

System Error and Warning Messages

HERS-ST requires a large degree of interaction with both text files and the underlying Microsoft Access database. HERS-ST has been designed to detect errors associated with these interactions, as well as several other potential system errors, and to notify you of this occurrence. Examples of these errors include "Disk Full," "Missing File," and "Insufficient Privileges." When one of these errors occurs, a message describing the error and the location within the HERSST application and where it was detected is displayed. You should record this information so that your local administrators or the FHWA can help you to resolve the issue. You can close the message window by clicking the OK button. Any operation that you were performing when you encounter this type of error should be disregarded, or at a minimum, thoroughly reviewed, since there is no guarantee that the operation completed successfully. The Frequently Asked Questions section that follows answers several common questions that users of HERS-ST have encountered.

HERS-ST Analysis Warning Messages

If HERS-ST generates any warning messages during analysis, it will halt and you will be prompted to either continue or halt the operation. If you continue, the analysis will proceed. If you halt the analysis to review the warning messages, they will be displayed in the system text editor. You will have the opportunity to view the message log. You are then given a choice to either terminate the analysis or ignore warning messages and continue.

Validation Messages

HERS-ST provides a tool for validating the data you intend to use for the analysis. Data used in HERS-ST require specific formatting, specifically the comma-delimited format specified in the 2000 HPMS Field Manual. Four prompts may appear during the import of your data:

  • The first prompt asks if you want to validate the data. If you answer "yes," the validation process will initiate. Answering "no," will cause HERS-ST to skip the data validation and load your data directly into HERS-ST; you can always validate it later. However, validating the data first will enable you to identify errors and fix them before undertaking the analysis, which may improve the quality of your results.
  • The second prompt you may see indicates that a highway section has violated a validation rule. You will be asked if you wish to continue importing the highway data. If your response is "no," the import process will terminate.
  • If you answered the previous prompt "yes," you will receive a prompt that asks if you want to mark valid sections as active (checked). This enables you to run the analysis immediately using only sections that have passed their validation tests.
  • After the import is complete, a final prompt will notify you. If the data violates any of the established validation rules for the highway data fields shown in the following table, HERS-ST will display the information in the lower pane of the Highway data viewer discussed in Chapter 6.
