1996 Excellence in Highway Design
Category 9 - Highway Improvements on Publicly Owned Land
Award of Excellence
Zuni Canyon Road
Cibola National Forest, New Mexico
Designer: | Central Federal Lands Highway Division |
Contractor: | Stimpel-Wiebelhaus |
The reconstruction of 18 km (11 miles) of Zuni Canyon Road was designed to be in harmony with the ecosystem, blending with the rural setting of the Zuni Mountains and improving watershed and habitat features, while also providing a much improved and safer facility for forest management and forest visitors. The use of permeable rock fills in lieu of pipe culverts, and the improvement of the Agua Fria Meadow watershed were noteworthy aspects of this project.
