MISSOURI SAFETY BELT STATISTICS
SAFETY BELT USAGE STATISTICS FROM 2005
Missouri's overal safety belt usage is close to 78% (77.41%). This includes passenger cars, SUVs, vans and pickup trucks. The national safety belt usage rate is 82%.
Safety belt usage rate for pickup trucks is 66%.
The safety belt usage rate for passenger cars is 80%.
The safety belt usage rate for vans & SUVs is 82%.
CHILD RESTRAINT USAGE STATISTICS FROM 2005
The 2005 data evealed a usage rate of 81.8% for children under age four.
86% of the children were located in the back of the vehicle (unchanged from previous years).
When the driver was belted, 88% of the children were also restrained. In contrast, when the driver was not belted 30% of the children were also not restrained.
Children were restrained in trucks 73.8% of the time in comparison to child restraint use in vans at 86%.
STATISTICS FROM 2004 TRAFFIC SAFETY COMPENDIUM (CRASH STATS)
1,130 people were killed in 2004 Missouri traffic crashes and 68,673 people were injured.
One person is injured every 7.7 minutes in a traffic crash in Missouri and one person is killed every 7.8 hours.
In 2004, Missouri had a total of 182,243 traffic crashes. The economic loss associated with these traffic crashes was estimated to be $3.7 billion.
A substantial number of drivers killed in 2004 Missouri traffic crashes were NOT wearing safety belts compared to those injured and not injured. A driver involved in a 2004 Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 37 chance of being killed if they were not wearing a safety belt. In those cases where the driver wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,283. The chances of being injured in a 2004 Missouri traffic crash was 1 in 3 if NOT wearing a seat belt. However, if they were wearing a seat belt, their chance of being injured dropped to 1 in 8.
