Long-Term Bridge Performance Program

Graph Chart

Uncertainties in condition, deterioration, maintenances actions, costs and time of applying actions to bridges at different ages of the bridge life. The charts depicts the subjectivity in modeling bridge conditions and maintenance practices applied to bridges. The horizontal axis represents the time or age of the bridge (or bridge component). The vertical axis represent the condition of the bridge (or bridge component). A solid curve goes from the top left to the bottom right of the chart represents the deterioration of the bridge (or bridge component) when no action is applied.

A horizontal blue dashed arrow between the origin of the chart and a point about one third of the length of horizontal axis from the origin with a label t1. A horizontal red dashed arrow between the origin of the chart and a point about one half of the length of horizontal axis from the origin with a label t2. An arrow from a phrase stating Uncertain Time of Applying/Delaying Actions pointing to the range between the two points representing the time on the horizontal axis. A dark blue column and a light blue column (shorter than the dark column) are drawn on top of the point on the solid curve corresponding to t1 and t2. A dotted dark blue callout box pointing to the dark blue column having a text Action A1 at time t1.

A dotted light blue callout box pointing to the light blue column having a text Action A2 at time t1. A red column is drawn on top of the point on the solid curve corresponding to t1. A dotted red callout box pointing to the red column having a text Action A2 at time t2. Three dashed arrows from a phrase stating Uncertain Costs associated with applied actions pointing to the three callouts. A dark blue dashed curve goes from the top of the of the dark blue column to the bottom right corner of the chart representing the deterioration of the bridge (or bridge component) when action A1 is applied at time t1.

A light blue dashed curve goes from the top of the of the light blue column to the bottom right corner of the chart representing the deterioration of the bridge (or bridge component) when action A2 is applied at time t1. A red dashed curve goes from the top of the of the red column to the bottom right corner of the chart representing the deterioration of the bridge (or bridge component) when action A1 is applied at time t2. Four dashed arrows from a phrase stating Uncertain Deterioration Rates associated with different actions pointing to the solid curve, dark blue curve, light blue curve, and red curve.
