Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2005

The President signed a seventh extension into law (H.R. 2566, P.L. 109-14) on May 31, 2005. This extension expires at midnight June 30, 2005.

On Thursday, May 26, the full Senate passed H.R. 2566, extending the program to June 30, 2005.

Late Wednesday, May 25, the full House approved by voice vote a one-month extension of federal highway and transit programs.

On Tuesday, May 24, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee leadership introduced the "Surface Transportation Extension Act of 2005" (H.R. 2566, STEA05).

  • Clean extension providing contract authority and obligation limitation for FHWA programs to midnight June 30, 2005.
  • Extends authority to spend from the Highway Trust Fund (HTF) through midnight June 30, 2005.
  • Extends the imposition of the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax to ensure the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can collect the full tax year's (July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2006) receipts in August 2005 as would be the usual practice.
