Program Administration
The transportation program for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is administered by their Engineering & Construction Services. A staff of 130 people works on all facets of public infrastructure.
Salt River has been operating under Self-Determination since the late 1970's, began contracting the IRR program in 1996 and is currently negotiating with BIA to include the program in their yearly compact agreement
The community receives approximately $1.2 million per year in IRR funding and $87,000 for maintenance. The community provides additional funds to transportation for a total program of about $3 million per year.
Salt River operates a transit system that interconnects with metropolitan transit system, Valley Metro.
The community has 132 miles of roadways and about 18 miles of state highways are also on the reservation.

Planning
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is located in an urbanized area and is bordered by Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tempe, AZ. There is some commercial development along the western edge of the reservation along the Highway 101 corridor. Much of the reservation is not developed and there is a large area of protected open space in the north and eastern part of the reservation. To the north of State Route 87 there are large areas of agricultural development.
The community completed a 5 year update to the 20-year transportation plan in 2001 and is a member of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). The short-range plan is divided into BIA funded projects and tribally funded projects.

Proposed Projects
Alma School Road
Alma School Road is the number one priority for the tribe. It is a high traffic corridor and will be rebuilt.

Gilbert Road
Gilbert Road will be constructed as a cooperative project with the county. The roadway will be 4 lanes in the future.

The community's membership and participation in MAG serves as a good example of tribal governments participation in the regional planning process.
