Completion of this 34 km (21 mile) highway provides the "missing link" of the circumferential route around the New York City metropolitan area. Construction of this portion was critical in relieving congestion on other area highways. Over 290 km (180 miles) of alternative alignments were studied before the final route was selected. The final alignment minimizes impacts on wetlands, parklands, and historic sites. More than 15 km (9 miles) of noise walls were constructed through residential areas to mitigate noise impacts. The drainage design was developed to avoid contaminating the underlying aquifer, and water-quality basins and special inlet designs were used to preserve the quality of adjacent waterways.
