1996 Excellence in Highway Design
Category 2 - Rural Highways
Award of Merit
TR 189 Over Hickory Creek
Bureau County, Illinois
Designer: | Bureau County |
Contractor: | Ladd Construction Co. |
A new bridge was built to replace an 81-year-old, narrow, concrete-slab bridge. The new bridge spanning across Hickory Creek was constructed to ensure long-term durability and environmental integrity. Made with Douglas Fir and Douglas Fir-Larch timber materials, the two-lane, timber bridge has a post-stressed laminated deck that uses lateral stressing rods. The design has both, a fully functional loading feature, and a long life expectancy. The bridge was funded, in part, through the Timber Bridge Construction Grant program of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991.
