1996 Excellence in Highway Design
Category 2 - Rural Highways
Award of Merit
Wisconsin Highway 23
Iowa County, Wisconsin
Designer: | Wisconsin Department of Transportation |
Contractor: | H. James & Sons Edward Karemer & Sons |
The 19 km (12 mile) reconstruction and resurfacing of Wisconsin Route 23 created an improved highway that sweeps through the wooded Wyoming Valley and preserves the scenic beauty of the area. It used innovative practices such as ground penetrating radar to detect underground caves, blended scenic overlooks into the roadway's landscape, and used architectural designs such as benched rock cuts. Reconstruction also eliminated several hairpin turns and flattened sharp curves to provide a significantly safer highway for residents and visitors alike.
