The 18 km (11 mile) 1-395 Transportation System between downtown Minneapolis and the growing western suburbs effectively integrates bus, carpool and highway facilities to provide the best possible incentives to transit and ride sharing. The system was designed and is managed to maximize travel time and cost benefits for people who carpool and ride the bus while maintaining a reasonable level of service for those people who must drive alone. This reconstruction of old U.S. Highway 12 from a four-lane expressway with signalized intersections into a state of the art integrated transportation system was completed in 1993.
