Ramp Over Tamiami Canal

Dade County, Florida

Designer:Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc.
Contractor:Dayco-Astaldi

In order to meet the clearance requirements over the Tamiami Canal, a conventionally designed bridge would have caused adjacent streets to be raised by approximately ¾, of a meter (2½ feet). This bridge design used the voided-slab technology which allows for a shallow structure depth. This innovative design avoided adverse property access impacts and the relocation of a nearby toll plaza. Although the bridge construction itself was more expensive, the overall project savings were estimated at a minimum of a quarter of a million dollars.
