South Yuba River Bridge

Nevada County, California

Designer:California Department of Transportation
Contractors:Nevada County, California

Extensive measures were taken during the design and construction of this bridge to protect the sensitive environment of the steep river canyon of the rugged Sierra Nevada. Caltrans worked with public and environmental groups in the six-year planning process to help determine the bridge location and identify aesthetic considerations. To keep the disturbance of the streambed, boulders and canyon slopes to a minimum, no access roads were allowed in the canyon and the contractor was required to build the bridge from the existing roadway.
