Peer Exchange Report: Nature-based Solutions for Coastal Highways, August 2018 (PDF 3.6 MB).
In Spring 2018, FHWA hosted four regional peer exchanges to inform the development of an implementation guide and to facilitate information exchange between transportation practitioners and coastal engineers and ecologists on nature-based solutions to protect roads from coastal flooding. This report provides a synthesis of the discussion, including project examples, successful approaches, and challenges in planning, permitting, design, and maintenance.
Texas Resilience and Planning Workshop (2017). The purpose of this workshop at the Texas Department of Transportation in Austin, Texas was to identify opportunities for metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and other transportation agencies in Texas to assess and address their vulnerabilities to natural hazards, and incorporate resilience into the transportation planning process.
Resilience and Transportation Planning and Project Development Peer Exchange: U.S. EPA Region 5 (April 2017). FHWA and EPA Region 5 organized and convened a peer exchange on resilience in transportation planning and project development in Chicago, Illinois. The objective of the meeting was to foster a meaningful exchange of ideas on issues and approaches for addressing emissions analysis and resilience in transportation planning and project development processes.
Natural Hazard Resilience and Planning Peer Exchange: Atlanta Regional Commission (October 2016). The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) hosted a peer exchange on natural hazard resilience in Atlanta, Georgia. The peer exchange was co-organized by FHWA and ARC.
Adaptation Peer Exchanges (2011 - 2012). FHWA held three peer exchanges between June 2011 and May 2012 on the role of State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and MPOs in adaptation. The purpose of the peer exchanges was to facilitate an exchange of ideas among transportation officials regarding strategies to assess and reduce the vulnerability of their transportation assets and services to projected changes in in temperature, precipitation, and sea level.
In April 2011, FHWA conducted a peer exchange on natural hazard impacts and adaptation issues in the mid-west, held in Indianapolis, Indiana. A first half-day was devoted to discussion among Indiana's MPOs. A second full day convened State DOT representatives from Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio, as well as FHWA Division Office and Resource Center personnel from mid-western states.
FHWA/AASHTO Adaptation Peer Exchange (December 2009). FHWA, with the support of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), convened a peer exchange on current adaptation activities and strategic needs in Schaumburg, Illinois. This workshop included senior officials of State DOTs, FHWA headquarters and Division Offices and AASHTO. This was one of series of national peer exchanges on integrating adaptation considerations into the transportation planning process.
MPO Peer Workshop on Planning for Changing Environmental Conditions (October 2008). This MPO peer workshop on transportation planning for changing environmental conditions, took place in Seattle, WA. The peer workshop focused on current MPO practices that address changing environmental conditions issues, as well as outcomes, challenges, and areas of common concern.
MPO Peer Workshop on Planning for Changing Environmental Conditions (September 2008). This MPO peer workshop on transportation planning for changing environmental conditions, took place in Albany, NY. The peer workshop focused on current MPO practices that address changing environmental conditions issues, as well as outcomes, challenges, and areas of common concern.
Workshops on Integrating Adaptation and Emissions Considerations with Transportation Planning (2010). FHWA sponsored five workshops on addressing adaptation and emissions in the State and metropolitan transportation planning processes in 2010.
1st Workshop on Impacts of Future Environmental Change on Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Transportation (March 2005). This workshop focused on the potential impacts of future environmental on hydraulics, hydrology, and transportation with a particular focus on sea level rise.
2nd Workshop on Impacts of Future Environmental Change on Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Transportation (March 2006). This workshop focused on the potential multimodal impacts of future environmental on hydraulics, hydrology, and transportation with a particular focus on sea level rise.
