The I-95 Dumfries Wayside Shelter in Virginia was dedicated by Lady Bird Johnson on May 11, 1965 Federal Highway Administrator Rex Whitton introduces Lady Bird Johnson to Douglas B. Fugate, Chairman and Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Highways.  Deputy Federal Highway Administrator Lawrence Jones (looking down) is to Mrs. Johnson's left. Federal Highway Administrator Rex Whitton tells the Landscape-Landmark Tour, "Highway builders were thrilled, as were millions of other Americans, when our President, Lyndon B. Johnson, said, ‘I want to make sure that the America we see from these major highways is a beautiful America.'" During dedication of the Dumfries Wayside Shelter, Federal Highway Administrator Rex Whitton introduced Lady Bird Johnson, calling her the "inspiration" for President Lyndon Johnson's America the Beautiful campaign.
Lady Bird Johnson, speaking to participants in the Landscape-Landmark Tour and observers at the Dumfries Wayside Shelter on I-95 in northern Virginia, said, "No one can drive this scenic highway without feeling a deep sense of gratitude for such a lush, green land, and a rush of pride in man's increasing determination to keep it within eyesight of the motorist." Lady Bird Johnson and Governor Albertis Harrison unveil a plaque at dedication of the I-95 Dumfries Wayside Shelter in Virginia.  Looking on is Douglas B. Fugate, Chairman and Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Highways.
