Maintenance

Maintenance

Maintenance programs refer to a series of methodical, ongoing activities designed to minimize the occurrence of systemic failures and to mitigate their impacts when failures do occur. These activities include replacing worn components, installing updated hardware and software, tuning the systems, and anticipating and correcting potential problems and deficiencies. Maintenance includes the development and implementation of action plans for responding quickly, efficiently, and in an orderly fashion to systemic failures.

To achieve these goals and to address potential risks it is necessary to have in place a program that strategically analyzes where there are risks to the network. A Maintenance Monitoring Program can assist the State DOT’s and the FHWA Division Offices to identify where these risks are and how to establish and maintain a consistent approach to address, assess, and prioritize the State DOT’s Maintenance Program threats and opportunities to improve the Federal-aid Highway Program and meet FHWA’s strategic goals and objectives. The Maintenance Monitoring Program provides an oversight framework for executing a risk-based monitoring approach to ensure maintenance of highway systems.
