MoDOT FHWA also serves as a resource to the state.
Designation of National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads 23 USC 162 FHWA Candidates for designation are solicited through the Division Office and must be nominated by the State. Nominated roads must first be designated as a State scenic byway and are required to have outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and/or archaeological qualities. Nominations are submitted to FHWA which reviews and forwards to the Office of Planning, Environment and Realty for further review. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation makes the final designation of National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads.
Scenic By Grant Application (Discretionary Funds) 23 USC 162 FHWA Candidates for scenic byway discretionary funds to undertake eligible projects along highways designated as National Scenic Byways, All-American Roads, or State Scenic Byways are solicited through the Division Office. The Division Office recommendation for approval is forwarded to the Office of Planning, Environment and Realty (HEP) and ultimately approved or disapproved by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
