Roadside Hardware
The Federal
Highway Administration requires all highway safety hardware used on the National Highway
System (NHS) to meet the safety performance criteria defined in NCHRP Report 350. A new web site
identifies and describes traffic barriers, bridge railings, end terminals, crash cushions, sign and pole
supports, work zone traffic control devices, and miscellaneous roadside features meeting the

The No-Zone is a national public outreach campaign to educate people about how to share the road safely with trucks and buses. To learn more visit

Federal Highway Administrator Ken Wykle reminds motorists
that "Safety is a promise we should make and carry out together."
His comments are part of U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater's
message urging motorists to drive safely as they travel during the July 4th weekend.

Earth Day Bike-In Federal Highway Administrator Kenneth R. Wykle gave an update on the "National Bicycling and Walking Study" at the Washington Area Bicyclist Association's (WABA) Earth Day Bike-In rally.
1999 Environmental Excellence Awards Ceremony
The thirteen FHWA 1999 Environmental Excellence award winners were honored. The FHWA Environmental Excellence awards recognize environmental leadership, innovative processes and cooperative partnerships.
We Remember
April 19, 1999, was the fourth anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Office Building in Oklahoma City. We honor those we lost and those who survived to carry on the work of the Agency.

FHWA is leading the national effort to reduce run-off-the-road crashes.
Shoulder surface treatments, commonly referred to as "Rumble
Strips" are effective in alerting drivers who are fatigued,
inattentive or otherwise unaware that they are leaving the road.
